In the feeder exercise, we will tap into our inherent creativity and challenge our minds to recognize and form unique patterns from seemingly unrelated elements. By combining distinct items or concepts, we'll flex our imaginative muscles and warm up our capacity to see connections where they aren't immediately apparent. The exercise consists of three columns:
Click on the Link: Start by clicking on your assigned group number. This will open a Google Doc document in a separate window.
Understand the Columns: You'll encounter three distinct columns on the page.
-
First Column: Draft a statement that begins with "I am a..." This could be an animal (like "I am a lion"), an object (for example, "I am a pen"), an emotion ("I am happiness"), a place ("I am Paris"), or any other noun you conjure.
-
Second Column: Similarly, craft another "I am a..." statement. However, this should bear no relation to your first column's choice. For instance, if you opted for "I am a lion" previously, you might now pen "I am a teacup."
-
Third Column: In this space, devise a unique statement or dialogue that might resonate in a world where both the elements you've chosen coexist. In our example, a fitting third-column entry might read, "You are a bit delicate to rule such a wild place."
Collaboration is Key: A key aspect of this exercise is group collaboration. All participants are encouraged to contribute to any of the three columns at any moment. This collective endeavor thrives on diverse imaginations converging, so let your creativity flourish and observe the innovative combinations your peers conceive.
Pick your Morsel: When the time stops, pick the one sentence (from any of the three columns!) that sparked your imagination the most. You are going to need it!
Tryptic Feeder
Start with the sentence you selected from your Tryptic Feeder and craft a monologue around it. Don't overcomplicate things! Remember, no one knows your identity, and nobody will see this. Just enjoy the process!
Tryptic Solo
This is PART III of the exercise.
The goal of this exercise is to come up with a SINGLE PIECE OF WRITING that you will all create, using the material you have written in a collaborative way. You will be free to:
-
edit ANY PARAGRAPH
-
move ANY PARAGRAPH
-
Delete anything (remember, though, your group goal is to come up with the best piece of writing you can!)
-
add ANYTHING
You will feel awkward working with other people's writing but try to overcome that feeling. While usually this exercise is done in communities that have a lot of trust, if this is the first time you are working together this way, you may hesitate. For the best results, jump to it!
Here is the procedure:
-
CLICK the link for your group number.
-
PASTE your paragraph ANYWHERE in the document. There will be a lot of people pasting so it will get crowded. REMEMBER--you are anonymous in this process!
-
Take two minutes to READ over your collaborators' paragraphs
-
When your facilitator starts, BEGIN EDITING. ALL THE PARAGRAPHS UNTIL THE GROUP COMES UP WITH A SINGLE PIECE OF WRITING
-
Don't worry about erasing, adding, or changing someone else's work. That's the point.
